The Great British Bake Off Series 11: Recap, Bakes and Winner

July 19, 2026

Spoiler note: this recap names the winner of Great British Bake Off series 11.

Series 11 of The Great British Bake Off aired from September 22 to November 24, 2020, and it is unlike any other series in the show's run for reasons that had nothing to do with baking. Filming, originally planned for April 2020, was pushed back to July after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the UK, and the entire cast and crew, around 120 people, quarantined and then lived together in a sealed "bubble" at Down Hall Hotel in Bishop's Stortford for the six weeks of production. The full show record lives on our Great British Bake Off hub.

How the format worked in series 11

Despite the wildly unusual production circumstances, the on-screen format did not change: a Signature bake for personal style, a Technical challenge where everyone works from the same stripped-down recipe and is ranked blind, and a Showstopper closing the episode as the week's most ambitious bake. Star Baker and the Hollywood Handshake remained exactly as fans expected them, which was very much the point: the production went to extraordinary lengths precisely so the finished episodes would look and feel like every other series, with none of the pandemic circumstances visible on screen.

The final and the winner

Peter Sawkins, a 20-year-old from Edinburgh, won series 11, beating Dave Friday and Laura Adlington in the final.

Placement Baker Hometown Age
Winner Peter Sawkins Edinburgh, Scotland 20
Runner-up Dave Friday Waterlooville 30
Runner-up Laura Adlington Gravesend 31

Sawkins was, at the time, the youngest winner in the show's history, and his win under such unusual production conditions made it one of the more talked-about series finales of the modern era. Laura Adlington, his closest rival, went on to build a public platform around body positivity and mental health advocacy after the series aired.

Hometowns and the shape of the cast

Two of the twelve bakers, Hermine Dossou and Sura Mitib, were based in London, with the rest spread across Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the south coast of England. Peter Sawkins' win also made Edinburgh the hometown of a champion for the first time in the show's run to that point.

Judges, hosts, and a few standout details

Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith judged, with Noel Fielding hosting alongside new co-host Matt Lucas, who replaced Sandi Toksvig for this series. The safety protocols were extensive: everyone involved self-isolated for nine days and took three COVID-19 tests before entering the hotel, then quarantined a further 14 days on-site before filming began. The cast's age range ran from Peter Sawkins, at 20, up to Linda Rayfield, at 61, the oldest baker of the series. It remains the only series filmed under that kind of production bubble, and it is often cited as proof of how far the crew was willing to go to keep the show running.

A finale watched under unusual circumstances

The series 11 final aired on November 24, 2020, during a period when much of the UK was itself under further lockdown restrictions, which gave the show's already-unusual production a strange symmetry with its audience's own circumstances that autumn, both crew and viewers navigating the same pandemic constraints from opposite sides of the screen.

If you're working through the archive

Series 11 makes a fascinating pair with series 10, the last "normal" series before it, and the show returned to more familiar production in series 12 the following year.
