The Great British Bake Off Series 13: Recap, Bakes and Winner
July 21, 2026

Spoiler note: this recap names the winner of Great British Bake Off series 13.
Series 13 of The Great British Bake Off aired from September 13 to November 15, 2022, and it turned out to be a series of lasts: the final one hosted by Matt Lucas, who announced his departure from the show that December. Twelve bakers entered the tent for the ten-episode run. The full show record lives on our Great British Bake Off hub.
How the format worked in series 13
Series 13 ran on the same three-bake week that has defined the show since 2010: a Signature bake to show individual style, a Technical challenge where every contestant bakes from an identical, stripped-down recipe and is ranked blind, and a Showstopper to close the episode as the most ambitious bake of the week. It is also worth knowing as a hosting transition year: the format itself did not change, but the voices calling it out from the sidelines were about to.
The final and the winner
Syabira Yusoff, a 32-year-old from London originally from Malaysia, won series 13, beating Abdul Rehman Sharif and Sandro Farmhouse in the final.
| Placement | Baker | Hometown | Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winner | Syabira Yusoff | London | 32 |
| Runner-up | Abdul Rehman Sharif | London | 29 |
| Runner-up | Sandro Farmhouse | London | 30 |
Yusoff moved to the UK from Malaysia in 2013 to continue her PhD and only took up baking in 2017, five years before winning. She worked as a cardiovascular research associate at King's College London at the time of filming and topped the leaderboard for the first three consecutive weeks of the series. Her win made her the first female champion since Sophie Faldo in series 8, and one of the few winners with fewer than five years of home baking experience behind them.

Hometowns and the shape of the cast
London dominated this series' casting more than any other in this run, with five of the twelve bakers, including winner Syabira Yusoff, based in the capital. The remaining bakers were drawn from Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the south coast, giving the final still a genuinely national spread despite the London concentration. Yusoff's win, combined with her comparatively short five years of home baking experience before entering the tent, made her one of the more unlikely champions in the show's recent run, and her day job as a cardiovascular research associate gave her one of the more academically specialized backgrounds of any winner covered in this series of recaps.
Judges, hosts, and a few standout details
Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith judged, with Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas hosting in what became Lucas's last series before Alison Hammond stepped in for series 14. The cast's age range ran from Maisam Algirgeet, at 18, the youngest baker of the series, up to Dawn Hollyoak, at 60. London dominated the hometown list this year, with four of the twelve bakers based in the capital.
The end of an era, quietly
Matt Lucas's departure was announced in December 2022, a month after series 13 finished airing, so viewers watching the series live had no idea they were seeing his final run until the news broke separately. That gap between broadcast and announcement is fairly typical for the show, which tends to confirm cast and crew changes well after a series has already wrapped rather than during transmission.
If you're working through the archive
Series 13 closes out the Matt Lucas hosting era that began in series 11 and continued through series 12, with series 14 marking the switch to Alison Hammond. The full explainer on hosts and judges across every era is in our Bake Off fan guide, and every champion since 2010 is listed in every Great British Bake Off winner. A decent set of piping bags is the fastest way to level up the kind of detail work that carried Yusoff through her run.
