    • Team Challenge

  4. Episode 4 · Expressive citrus macarons

Citrus-flavored macarons must show both happy and sad faces while retaining the precision of the French sandwich cookie.

    • Challenge

  5. Episode 5 · Paired opposites

Partners make separate half-cakes that must join cleanly into one design about opposites, then absorb a surprise ingredient.

    • Team Challenge

      Two-part opposites cake

Each teammate makes half of a cake so the joined halves express an assigned pair such as fire and ice, night and day, land and sea, or big and small, then incorporates a surprise ingredient.

  6. Episode 6 · Unusual tart flavors

    Freaky Flavors

The bakers translate a challenging savory, floral, spicy, or aromatic ingredient into a balanced large tart.

    • Challenge

      Freaky-flavor tart

Create a large tart led by an assigned unusual flavor such as jalapeno, goat cheese, yuzu, pink peppercorn, anise, blue cheese, or curry.

  7. Episode 7 · Tropical bread volcanoes

    Monkey See, Monkey Bake

Packaged biscuit dough becomes pull-apart monkey bread shaped into a smoking volcano and flavored with assigned tropical fruit.

    • Challenge

Sweet tacos must imitate assigned savory fillings and arrive as a complete plate with a churro component.

    • Challenge

    • Semifinal

Ingredients

  • 6 slices bacon
  • 180 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
  • 115 g unsalted butter, softened
  • 120 g light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 80 ml pure maple syrup, divided
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 120 ml whole milk
  • 225 g full-fat cream cheese, softened
  • 60 g unsalted butter, softened
  • 240 g powdered sugar

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 180 C, or 160 C fan. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with paper cases.
  2. Cook the bacon in a skillet until crisp. Drain it well, cool, and finely chop.
  3. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat 115 g butter with the brown sugar until light, then beat in the eggs one at a time.
  4. Beat 60 ml maple syrup and the vanilla into the butter mixture. Fold in the dry ingredients in three additions, alternating with the milk.
  5. Divide the batter among the cases and bake for 18 to 20 minutes, until a tester comes out clean. Cool completely.
  6. Beat the cream cheese with the remaining 60 g butter until smooth. Add the powdered sugar and remaining 20 ml maple syrup and beat just until thick.
  7. Pipe or spoon the frosting onto the cupcakes. Finish with the chopped bacon immediately before serving.

This is an original Baking Show Guide home adaptation inspired by the episode brief, not a contestant recipe or an official Food Network recipe.

Cook the bacon until crisp and drain it thoroughly so it does not soften the frosting.

Refrigerate frosted cupcakes and bring them toward room temperature before serving.
